Nairy's Residence

In rapidly evolving North Bangalore, the Jarakabande Reserve Forest stands as one of the last vestiges of the region's natural landscape. Adjoining this woodland, the residence is situated on a trapezoidal corner site of approximately 3,500 square feet, flanked by roads on two sides and embraced by a wooded park that seamlessly merges with the reserve forest. The site slopes gently from the southeast towards the northwest, presenting both challenges and opportunities. While the subtropical setting required protection from snakes and insects, it also allowed the home to celebrate birdsong, cool breezes, and an enduring connection with nature.

The residence was designed to accommodate three generations—elderly parents, a couple, and their teenage daughter. The exterior projects an aura of strength, with an imposing 3-metre-high corten steel pedestrian gate punctuated by slender openings that offer glimpses of the spaces within. Crossing the threshold, visitors are welcomed by a tranquil koi pond, polished granite steps, and a resting bench that marks a gentle transition into the home.

A central axis comprising the triple-height entrance lobby, a suspended staircase crafted from steel and wood, and a double-height prayer space forms the organizational spine of the house. This sequence visually and physically connects the different levels while creating dramatic spatial experiences. The ground floor is planned for accessibility, placing the parents' bedroom, dining area, and kitchen on the same level. Parking occupies the lowest northwest corner of the site, allowing the living room above to open onto a terrace garden overlooking the forest
